Really Dissapointed

I’m really disspointed in the community this morning. At least, the community over at Allakhazam. Maybe I’m naive, maybe I’m an idealist, I don’t know.

It all started last night with a posting asking the community what should be done with a confessed gilbuyer. The poster wasn’t the one who had to make the ultimate decision, but was feeling out the community to see what their opinions were on the matter. The gilbuyer in question had apparently confessed to buying the gil in LS chat, only 1 million, and had only done it once.

Now, my position on gilbuying is that it is WRONG. It is the reason RMT are still around, and it has disrupted the economy in-game. I have no respect for people who break the rules and do this. If I were to discover that someone I knew and respected in-game had bought gil, I would turn them in with no looking back. No matter how I felt about them. I feel that strongly about this.

I don’t care if you’re new to the game and didn’t know any better, or whether you are a respected member of the community and lead the most uber LS on your server. If you are a gilbuyer, you are singlehandedly contributing to RMT and to the continuing problem. Gilbuyers demean those of us who work hard to make our gil, and should not be given any leniency whatsoever.

So, the reason for my disappointment this morning  is that after posting at length on the thread at Alla, expressing my opinions, and having a very scant few people agree with me, a lot of people came back and said that they would give this person a second chance, and that they wouldn’t ever call out a well-known gilbuyer because if a well-known gilbuyer were called out, they might lose their chance to get the high end gear since they figure that a lot of the well-known and well respected members of the community must be gilbuyers, and that’s how Dynamis and other endgame events must be funded.

I am disappointed that people would choose gear over the right and moral thing to do. I’m disappointed that people aren’t willing to take the chance to make the game better by getting rid of and exposing these people who are BREAKING THE RULES.  Members of the community have the chance to excise these players and make the game better in the long run, but they will choose to turn a blind eye to this behavior in order to get their shinies.

And that makes me a sad Taru.

  1. People who buy gil should hang out with those who also bot for NM claims.

  2. YES!

    <3 for Razorcat.

  3. The unfortunate truth is that there are a lot of people out there who buy gil, or have bought gil in the past and amassed vast quantities of it.

  4. I can understand how you feel. But for me, I don’t blame those who bought gil not knowing the end effect they have contributed to. Hopefully they learn how wrong it is and stop buying gil.

But for those who know and still continue to buy gil, these are the people who really need to be grilled. :)

  5. GB are not all the same.

It depends, should understand. As for myself i never bought gils, but I admit I wouldn’t mind buying 1m out of nowhere for some basic needs because ya know……..working 10hrs+day IRL, and wandering in the game with 10k in your pocket is not the best… and I don’t like to always farm the few time i’m there.

I always tought that SE itself should make their rmt business. Something like, can get max xxxx gils with this id and with this cc.

I hate and blame people who constantly throw their real money into gils, anough to buy a relic they should burn.

But buying 1m~ every 3-4 months is not a prob IMO.

  6. I understand where you’re coming from Jowah, I just don’t agree with it. I too work 10 hour days and come home, and the last thing I want to do is try and figure out where I’m going to get the gil to pay for all of the gear I need. It makes the thought of buying gil very tempting, and I’m not even really all that much into the endgame scene yet.

I stop those thoughts though, with the knowledge that it is against the rules, and that’s enough for me. I’ve played on other games where you could buy that game’s currency with real money, which was supported by the game’s creators, but the economies in those games always suffered because of it. Sure, the game company may be making more money, but do the players of the game get any enjoyment out of it other than the fact that they were able to buy that shiny piece of gear a lot quicker than if they had gotten the currency in a normal way?

This is a difficult topic for many I think because there isn’t a delineated “this is wrong, this is right” situation. In some communities, it’s ok, in others it’s not, so there’s a lot of conflicted opinions out there. My opinion though, is that for FFXI, it’s wrong, and yeah, maybe we can reform the first-time buyers as Wyred suggested, but once that one-time buyer sees what they’re going to have to do in-game to get that money that was so easily delivered to them by putting in their credit card information, I’m willing to bet that most of them will just go back to IGE or whereever and buy gil again and again and again.

What really makes me sad about all this though, is that there are well-known repeat offenders out there, that are KNOWN by members of the community, and those members aren’t doing anything about it for fear of losing the ability to get their endgame gear. They don’t want to stand up and do the right thing just because that gilbuyer may be funding their Dynamis run, or whatever. That’s what really makes me sad. These are the people who are damaging the game’s economy on a regular basis, and it’s known, talked about, and laughed about, but noone wants to turn them in for fear of losing their shinies.
